植物细胞工程与生命、材料、工程、信息等学科密切相关，互为促进。本书编者尝试构建起植物细胞工程学科相对系统又能反映多学科有机融合的知识体系，这一体系在第1版6年多的教学与科研实践中逐步得到更多同仁的认可，此次再版的目的之一是使其构架进一步完善。为此，特做了以下3方面的修订工作：（1）更新本领域理论与技术研究进展，以求及时反映学科进展，如在第一章中补充了细胞分化、体细胞胚形成等的进展，第二章中增加了植物离体培养遗传变异发生的细胞学和分子机制研究的新成果等；（2）调整有关章节结构，以求进一步完善本学科的知识体系，如第四章中将雄核发育途径和单倍体形成途径合并为一个问题进行讨论；（3）完善相关内容，如补充了人工合子和体内合子原生质体培养的内容，增加了植物资源的慢生长保存等内容。本次修订后，内容更加充实，也增强了实用性。
本书为普通高等教育“十一五”国家级规划教材，适用于生物科学、生物技术和生物工程专业的本科、研究生教学，也可供植物科学相关领域的研究人员参考。
